Public Education in an Age of Populism

In this keynote, political scientist Jared Wesley explores how politics and policymaking work in an age of populism -- and what it means for Alberta’s classrooms. He begins by contrasting pluralist policymaking, which balances diverse voices, with populist approaches that claim to speak for a single “real people.” Drawing on recent examples, he shows how the provincial government is operating within – and reshaping – Alberta’s political culture. Wesley highlights a striking “perception gap”: while most Albertans personally reject or feel uneasy about these measures, they believe their neighbours are largely supportive. The talk concludes with practical strategies teachers can use to navigate this environment and defend inclusive, democratic spaces in their schools and communities.
