Supporting Students with Diabetes
Students may face different chronic health conditions that require specialized care and attention, making it crucial for teachers to be well-prepared to support their needs. Students with diabetes represent a unique population within K-12 schools, facing specific challenges that are often not fully understood by teachers. Incorporating diabetes care into the framework of inclusive education is essential for creating equitable and supportive learning environments, as emphasized in TQS Competency 4. In this session, we will discuss key facts and myths about diabetes, the management of diabetes from the student's perspective, and how educators can provide the necessary support. Information from this session will also be beneficial for educators working with students with other medical conditions, helping them develop awareness of the complexities of the lives of students living with medical conditions. Participants will explore the daily challenges students with diabetes face, including blood sugar monitoring, insulin management, and the emotional and social aspects of living with the condition. We will also cover important policy guidelines and resources that help create a supportive environment for students with diabetes, ensuring their well-being and full participation in school life.
