Co-Regulation and the Myths of Self-Regulation

Thursday 19 February 2026·5:30 pm

Self-regulation isn't an innate skill—it's a learned process that depends on repeated co-regulation with caring adults. Neuroscience shows that the prefrontal cortex (responsible for self-control) isn’t fully developed until early adulthood. When we tell kids to "just breathe" or "control yourself," we’re asking them to do something their brains aren’t yet wired to do alone. Co-regulation is the bridge. By offering calm presence, attuned responses, and embodied coping strategies, adults literally help rewire children’s nervous systems. The myth that kids should self-regulate independently ignores a biological truth: regulation is relational first, solo later.
