Understanding the “Why” Behind Behavior: A Guide to the Functions of Behavior in Early Childhood Why do young children engage in challenging behaviors—and what can educators do about it? This session will introduce participants to the four main functions of behavior: attention, escape, access to tangibles, and sensory/automatic reinforcement. Through a practical, developmentally appropriate lens, participants will learn how to observe behavior using the ABC (Antecedent–Behavior–Consequence) model and begin identifying the “why” behind common behavior challenges in early learning environments. Grounded in child development theory and aligned with best practices and state licensing regulations, this training will equip educators with foundational knowledge and tools to better support children with diverse needs. While presented in a lecture-style format, the session will include real-life examples, opportunities for reflection, and time for questions. All participants will receive an access code to download visual supports introduced during the session, such as first/then boards and ABC tracking forms, to help immediately implement learning into their classroom practice. This session is ideal for early educators, administrators, and support staff seeking to enhance their understanding of behavior and strengthen their approach to classroom management through empathy, observation, and proactive strategies.
