FLIP IT: Strategies for Transforming Challenging Behaviors

Thursday 22 January 2026·3:15 pm

Challenging behaviors in early childhood settings can feel overwhelming, but they can also provide powerful opportunities for growth when addressed with the right tools. This interactive session introduces educators to FLIP IT, a simple, strength-based strategy designed to guide children through moments of frustration, anger, or defiance with compassion and effectiveness. FLIP IT is built around four easy-to-remember steps—Feelings, Limits, Inquiries, and Prompts—that help children identify emotions, understand boundaries, explore solutions, and practice positive alternatives. Participants will work in small groups to analyze real-world scenarios representing varying levels of challenging behavior and practice applying the FLIP IT process. Through role-play, discussion, and guided reflection, educators will explore how this strategy can be used not only for significant behavioral challenges but also for everyday struggles, turning difficult moments into teachable opportunities. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the root causes of behavior rather than focusing solely on the behavior itself, with the overall goal of helping children develop coping skills and resilience for their social-emotional toolbox. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of the four-step FLIP IT process, practical experience applying it in realistic scenarios, and increased confidence in implementing it consistently in their own classrooms. This session equips educators with tools that are research-informed, developmentally appropriate, and directly aligned with best practices in child development and professional growth.
