Aligning District Curriculum to the National Health Education Standards to Build Skills-Based Health Curriculum

Saturday 21 March 2026·10:30 am

Take a step out of your classroom and think like a department head. How would you align your district curriculum to SHAPE America's National Health Education Standards? Alignment to the National Halth Education Standards provides the district with opportunities to update curriculum based on skills rather than content, design and implement professional development, and provide up-to-date instruction that benefits the health and well-being of students. Follow along with an example that examines a sample middle school curriculum and rearranges the content and skill under Standard 1 and skills standards. The result reveals gaps in content and skill for the grade span. Observe how to analyze the gaps and begin to reenvision the district curriculum as comprehensive skills-based curriculum, based on skills units rather than content units. Work with colleagues to practice aligning curriculum to the National HE standards, discuss the pros and cons, and share your thoughts with session participants.
