Crafting Inclusive Integrated Experiences: Unleashing Skill-Based Learning for Language Acquisition

This session supports integrated learning experiences for skill-based Health Education, with a particular focus on literacy instruction supporting high risk learners. This session highlights how integration supports students in demonstrating understanding across multiple subject areas, enhancing academic mastery, communication, critical thinking, creativity, innovation, lifelong learning, and personal growth.

The session will provide specific strategies and resources for supporting students. Key areas of focus include:

Customized supports for all students, including MLLs Strategies for explicit vocabulary instruction, including choosing appropriate words (e.g., Tier 1 words are important for high-risk learners and ELLs) and using a structured routine for teaching new words with student-friendly definitions, visuals, and opportunities for use. Techniques for determining and addressing the academic language demands of a lesson Examples of language scaffolds across the four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing Methods to activate and build background knowledge
