Engaging Parents in APA: Promoting Physical Activity for Autistic Children

Thursday 19 March 2026·12:00 pm

Parental involvement in after-school adapted physical activity programs for autistic children has demonstrated numerous benefits, for both the children and their families. Parent participation in such programs can enhance parental self-care practices, foster a sense of community among families, and motivate families to participate in physical activities outside of the structured program. While equipping autistic children with the skills and confidence to engage in physical activity is important, including parents as active partners is equally critical for promoting physical activity participation beyond the structure of the program. This presentation will explore strategies to involve parents in after-school adapted physical activity programs. We will share practical approaches to create inclusive, family-centered experiences that empower parents to confidently support their child’s participation in physical activity, while simultaneously encouraging their own engagement. Attendees will leave with tools to meaningfully engage parents in advocacy, after-school activity, and family-based wellness.
