Motivating All Students in Physical Education: Putting Theory Into Practice
Student disengagement in physical education is a pervasive challenge at every education level in K-12. This presentation explores how foundational motivational theories can be practically applied by physical education teachers to cultivate sustained student enthusiasm and participation within the gymnasium. Drawing from evidence-based practices in education, we will delve into actionable strategies designed to enhance student autonomy, competence, and relatedness within the physical education environment. Specifically, this session offers research-informed techniques to empower teachers and transform physical education into a more engaging and impactful experience for every student, promoting lifelong physical literacy. Participants will gain concrete pedagogical strategies to: a) structure lessons and learning activities; b) provide effective feedback; and c) create an inclusive classroom climate that intrinsically motivates students.
