Native Roots in Sports and Games
Did you know that most of the sports and games we know today have Native roots? Archery, badminton, baseball, doubleball, football, golf, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball all have indigenous ancestors. These wonderful games traditionally are used to settle disputes, provide healing, or for social entertainment. They support physical fitness and well being, as well as provide community teachings and responsibilities. Playing games in Native North America was an important part of everyday life and taught the people how to work together and respect each other’s gifts. Participants will learn, play and receive lesson plans to incorporate these amazing games from Turtle Island into their current physical education or physical activity program.
