Parental Coaching Behaviors: Turning Engagement Into Benefit, Not Harm

Friday 20 March 2026·12:00 pm

Motivated participation by coaches, athletes, and parents in youth sports can function as an effective educational system built on continuous, positive interaction among all three parties. Parental involvement in youth sports is inevitable, and when parents take on a coaching role, whether intentional or not, their influence can either accelerate an athlete’s growth or cause unnecessary pressure and harm. The unique positioning and profession of the coach can guide parents to take actions that maximize the benefits and minimize the risk of harm for young athletes and promote their development. The aim of the presentation is to equip coaches with the knowledge and practical strategies needed to address parental coaching in youth sports. Attendees will learn practical strategies for working with parents, including how to channel their enthusiasm into constructive support, provide consistent messages between coach and parent, and foster a balanced approach to feedback.
