Practical Application of Spirituality: A Component of Coaching and Athlete Well-Being
Spiritual wellness is an essential element of mental health, though coaches may not know how to address spirituality in a practical and appropriate manner. The absence of spiritual guidance can lead to poor mental hygiene and a sense of despair. Activities intended to bring joy can easily lose their meaning. In a classroom setting, athletes were prompted to reflect on their spiritual experiences in sport. Findings from this preliminary research suggest athletes yearn to express and explore their spirituality. Moreover, due to the powerful nature of their position, a coach is the perfect candidate to act as a spiritual guide and mentor to the athletes. The aim of this presentation and activity is to equip coaches and educators with practical tools such as personal reflection, active and passive meditations, mantras, and community revelations. Attendees will learn how to integrate spiritual practices through examples, reflection, and active participation in group exercises.
