Protective Power of Physical Activity: Move More, Connect More, Miss Less

Wednesday 18 March 2026·8:00 am

Physical activity is a powerful protective factor for children and adolescents, supporting physical health, mental health, emotional well-being, and academic success. This session will share findings from recent studies that highlight the importance of school-based opportunities for physical activity.

A systematic scoping review found that opportunities before, during, and after school—such as physical education, recess, classroom activity, sports, and before/after school programs—are consistently linked to stronger school connectedness. Students who engage in more physical activity report stronger peer and teacher relationships, a greater sense of belonging, and deeper connection to their school.

Another study analyzed nationally representative data on U.S. youth ages 6–17 and found that regular physical activity is associated with fewer school absences. Reduced absenteeism, in turn, supports stronger academic achievement, enhanced social skills, and greater student engagement.

Together, these findings underscore physical activity’s role in fostering connected, engaged, and healthy students.
