Swing Into Success: Teaching Golf Through Specialized Content Knowledge
This session presents essential teaching resources designed to enhance both preservice and in-service physical education teachers’ specialized content knowledge (SCK) -- the unique, in-depth understanding required to effectively diagnose performance common errors and deliver developmentally and instructionally appropriate learning tasks. Given golf's popularity in the United States, school-based physical education offers a cost-effective and inclusive platform for introducing students to the golf game, fostering both skill development and long-term interest. This presentation introduces a comprehensive SCK packet that includes a detailed analysis of common performance errors and corresponding correction strategies across five swing elements, instructional task progressions aligned with best practices, and an exemplary 15-day block plan focused on key golf skills, including, putting, wedge shots, iron play, and driver swings. By engaging with these resources, attendees will strengthen their instructional confidence and competence in delivering a well-structured, developmentally appropriate golf unit within school physical education programs.
