The “TGEfU” Model: Teaching Games (and Equity) for Understanding

Teaching equity in physical education presents valuable opportunities for student growth but can be challenging to implement. The “Jewel Thief” game offers a simple and engaging way to introduce equity concepts through the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model. In this lacrosse-based activity, teams scoop, pass, and catch various objects from a central hula-hoop to an outer one using correct techniques. Initially, all stations are spaced equally. As the game progresses, the setup is modified: objects that are easier to manipulate remain farther apart, while more challenging ones are moved closer. These changes help students experience the difference between equity and equality firsthand. As teams rotate, they encounter varying levels of difficulty, promoting empathy, fairness, and teamwork. This hands-on approach fosters social-emotional learning through movement focusing on concepts of inclusion, collaboration, and reflection, and making equity a central part of the physical education experience.
