Steal, Adapt, Teach: A Treasure Trove of Ready-to-Use EAL Activities

Whether you are at the start of your teaching career and are looking to build up a bank of classroom activities, or you’ve been in the classroom for years and are tired of reaching for the same old ideas, this workshop has something for everyone. Every activity has been road-tested in real classrooms, refined over decades, and chosen because it actually works, not because it looks good in a textbook. The workshop is built around a deceptively simple framework: What do I want my students to do in English? and What do I want my students to know in or about English? From that foundation, you’ll explore activities covering all five macro-skills, vocabulary, and grammar — organised across three practical sections: Although most examples come from a Secondary context, the ideas are broad enough to work across most Primary and Secondary classrooms. You’ll also have time to develop materials during the workshop itself, so the stealing can start before the session is over. Rowena Bata has been a Languages teacher for 25 years and she has worked at schools in Victoria as well as in France, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia. She has held various positions of leadership and has taught students of all ages, from Prep to adult. Rowena holds a Master’s degree in Linguistics and she is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Trainer. She is interested in bridging the gap between second language acquisition theory and what happens in a classroom, and she has a particular focus on the role that technology can play in the language learning process. Rowena has a wealth of experience that she brings to her presentations and her workshops are always practical and full of ideas for teachers to take away and use in their class immediately.
