The Languages Staffroom: Solo but not alone
FreePresented by Critical Agendas
Teaching languages alone is genuinely hard: no faculty to ask, no one to cover your class, no colleague who understands why that lesson on the subjunctive fell apart. This workshop was built for exactly that situation.
This workshop has been designed to support Language teachers who are recent graduates and early career teachers, and who may not have the support of a large language faculty, especially teachers in rural and remote schools. Come along to your virtual Languages staffroom where you can connect with other beginning teachers, ask questions and make use of Rowena’s 30 years of classroom experience. The workshop will cover:
This is a practical workshop, and participants will have time to work with Rowena to develop activities that they can use with their classes immediately. All of the activities presented in this workshop are easy to create and adapt, and are designed to ensure students make good progress and are enthusiastic about their Language classes.
Although the examples given in this workshop will come from French, the ideas presented are general in nature and can be applied in most Language classrooms, so teachers of all languages are encouraged to attend, particularly if they are the only Language teacher in their school.
Target audience: recent graduates and early career teachers, particularly those who work in rural and remote schools and lack the support network of a large Language faculty
Rowena Bata has been a Languages teacher for 25 years and she has worked at schools in Victoria as well as in France, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia. She has held various positions of leadership and has taught students of all ages, from Prep to adult. Rowena holds a Master’s degree in Linguistics and she is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Trainer. She is interested in bridging the gap between second language acquisition theory and what happens in a classroom, and she has a particular focus on the role that technology can play in the language learning process. Rowena has a wealth of experience that she brings to her presentations and her workshops are always practical and full of ideas for teachers to take away and use in their class immediately.
