The ABLE (ACTFL Black Language Educators) Institute is a fully funded, four-day immersive professional development program designed to support aspiring and practising language teachers from underrepresented backgrounds. Hosted by ACTFL at Howard University, ABLE provides participants with hands-on mentorship, leadership training, and practical preparation for the classroom, including sessions on lesson planning, inclusive teaching practices, and pathways to certification. The 2026 Institute also features a new Professional Strand for practising language education professionals, led by 2026 ACTFL President Krishauna Hines-Gaither. Registration, meals, and housing are provided at no cost to participants who do not live in the local area, removing financial barriers to accessing high-quality professional learning. The application deadline is May 15, 2026. ACTFL (the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) is the largest professional organisation dedicated to language education in the United States, supporting educators across all languages and levels with research-based standards, professional development, and advocacy for world language instruction.
