Oracy in the Early Years: Supporting Young Children to Communicate Effectively

The Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA) presents Oracy in the Early Years: Supporting Young Children to Communicate Effectively, a two-session workshop series exploring oracy and oral language development strategies for early years educators. Running across two connected sessions on 28 March and 9 May 2026, the workshops are designed to be interactive and practically focused, addressing key concepts and strategies for developing young children’s spoken communication skills. ALEA — Australia’s independent professional association for literacy educators from early childhood through tertiary education — has been supporting literacy professionals since its founding in 1975, and their events consistently combine research-informed content with practical classroom application. Oracy — the ability to express oneself fluently and effectively through spoken language — is increasingly recognised as foundational to literacy development, academic achievement, and social participation. For early years educators, building oracy skills is not an add-on but a core part of creating rich language environments where young children can thrive. This workshop series provides dedicated time and expert guidance to explore how oral language development can be intentionally supported and strengthened in early years settings. For early childhood educators, kindergarten and prep teachers, and early years literacy leaders across Australia, this ALEA workshop offers a valuable opportunity to deepen practice in an area that underpins all subsequent learning.
