The Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) is Australia's leading trauma-informed professional development program, equipping educators with evidence-based strategies for engaging all students — particularly those who are most disengaged or affected by adverse childhood experiences. Developed by Berry Street, one of Australia's largest independent child and family services organisations, the BSEM draws on research from neuroscience, positive psychology, and trauma-informed practice to create a comprehensive framework for whole-school transformation. This multi-day professional learning program is structured around five interconnected practice domains — Body, Relationship, Stamina, Engagement, and Character — each addressing a critical aspect of how trauma affects learning and how educators can respond effectively. Participants learn practical classroom strategies for supporting self-regulation, building strong student-teacher relationships, developing academic perseverance, fostering meaningful engagement with learning, and cultivating positive character strengths. The training combines evidence-informed theory with immediately applicable techniques that teachers can integrate into their daily practice. The BSEM has been independently evaluated and shown to improve student engagement, wellbeing, self-regulation, and academic achievement. It is supported by the Victorian Department of Education and widely adopted across Australian schools. This Perth-based session is part of a series running from September through November 2026, giving educators sustained professional learning with time to implement and reflect between sessions — a design that research consistently shows leads to more lasting instructional change.
