Center for Black Educator Development Professional Development

The Center for Black Educator Development (CBED) provides professional development focused on achieving educational equity and racial justice by rebuilding the Black teacher pipeline and transforming teaching practices across American schools. Launched in June 2019, CBED addresses one of education's most critical challenges: the stark underrepresentation of Black educators in classrooms nationwide, and the impact this has on Black and other disenfranchised students who benefit enormously from having teachers who reflect their identities and communities. CBED's professional development offerings centre on developing culturally responsive, affirming, and sustaining teaching practices that unlock the power of diverse cultural insights and anti-discriminatory mindsets. Training includes direct facilitation and train-the-trainer programmes covering implicit bias in hiring, engaging in DEI dialogue, and anti-racist, anti-bias, and equity-centred approaches to school leadership. By partnering with school districts, universities, and community organisations, CBED ensures that professional development reaches the educators and institutions that can have the greatest impact on diversifying the teaching profession. Beyond professional development, CBED runs transformative programmes including the Freedom Schools Literacy Academy, the Teaching Academy, and the Future Teachers of Excellence Fellowship, all designed to recruit, train, and support Black educators from high school through their teaching careers. For schools and districts committed to building a more diverse, culturally responsive teaching workforce, CBED offers both the professional development training and the pipeline programmes needed to create lasting, systemic change in who teaches and how they teach.
