Keys to Adolescent Literacy Session D: Teaching Text Structure to Support Reading and Writing is a live virtual training session from Keys to Literacy that helps grades 5–12 educators understand how explicitly teaching text structure can dramatically improve students' reading comprehension and writing quality. This session is part of the nine-session Keys to Adolescent Literacy Professional Learning Series, which addresses the full range of adolescent literacy skills. Text structure—the way information is organised within a text—is one of the most powerful yet underutilised tools for supporting adolescent readers and writers. In this session, participants learn how to teach students to recognise common text structures (such as cause and effect, compare and contrast, problem and solution, sequence, and description) and use that knowledge to better comprehend informational and literary texts. The training also addresses how understanding text structure supports writing, helping students organise their ideas more effectively and produce more coherent, well-structured compositions.
