Online Writing Workshop – Crafting the Story (Rising 5-6th Graders)
Presented by UCLA Center X
UCLA Center X's 'Crafting the Story' Online Writing Workshop offers students entering 5th and 6th grades an engaging ten-day summer programme (9AM-12PM daily) focused on developing their skills and confidence as writers. Run through the UCLA Writing Project โ part of UCLA's School of Education and Information Studies โ this student-facing programme represents the teaching-of-writing expertise that also underpins UCLA's professional development work with teachers of writing across all levels. The workshop is taught by UCLA Writing Project fellows โ classroom teachers who have participated in an Invitational Writing Project leadership institute and who bring both a love of writing and deep pedagogical expertise in teaching young writers. Classes combine whole-group instruction, small-group sharing with peers, individual writing time, and one-on-one conferences between students and their teacher. Students grow dramatically as writers over the programme, expanding their stylistic repertoires, exploring multiple genres, and drafting both short and long pieces while gaining confidence in their individual voice and style. While this is a student programme rather than a traditional teacher PD event, it exemplifies the teaching-of-writing philosophy and practices that UCLA Center X promotes through its broader professional development work with educators, making it relevant for teachers seeking models of excellent writing instruction.
