While all students must learn how to use academic language, this task can be particularly challenging for multilingual learners. In content-area classes and general education classrooms, multilingual learners must integrate their emerging knowledge of the English language with the content information they are studying.

How can we intentionally enhance instruction to strengthen content learning and accelerate language development simultaneously?

In this edWebinar, Dr. Katie Toppel shares techniques and activities you can use to support students with a lens on structured output. Drawing on her experience as an English Language Development Specialist and ESOL Educator, Dr. Toppel will highlight the connective thread between reading, writing, speaking, and listening to support language development alongside content learning.

Dr. Katie Toppel is an English Language Development Specialist in Oregon serving multilingual learners through co-planning, co-teaching, and small-group instruction. Dr. Toppel’s instructional background includes experience teaching kindergarten and first grade in addition to working as a K-12 Support Services Teacher at the Franconian International School in Germany. She has taught courses in the ESOL endorsement series at Portland State University and continues to support teachers in their professional learning journeys.
