ACMI and VATE present: The Holdovers
VATE and ACMI co-present a film screening and discussion connecting cinema to English teaching practice.
Presented by VATE
VATE and ACMI co-present this special screening and pedagogical discussion of Gurrumul, Paul Williams' acclaimed 2017 documentary about Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu โ a blind Indigenous artist from Elcho Island and one of Australia's most celebrated musical voices. The evening begins with a screening in ACMI's Cinema 2, followed by a facilitated discussion exploring how to teach this powerful text in the English classroom. The documentary offers rich material for exploring themes of cultural identity, storytelling, the relationship between art and country, and the tensions between public fame and private cultural life. This is a valuable professional learning opportunity for English teachers to deepen their engagement with Indigenous Australian stories and share teaching approaches with colleagues.
Evidence base: Part of the long-running VATE-ACMI professional learning partnership supporting VCE English text study.
