Building relational understanding in science by using Modified Frayer Model
This session explores how to modify Frayer Models so they can be used as versatile tools to support deeper, more connected learning in the science classroom. While traditionally used to build vocabulary, Frayer Models can be adapted to help students clarify key concepts in the Science by placing emphasis on describing and visualizing relational links to practical applications as well as equations and graphs. The final ‘fancy flashcard’ makes explicit comparisons that align with dual coding and enhance relational understanding in the subject (cf. SOLO taxonomy). Drawing on a wide range of classroom examples from all Sciences. The session will show how these tools can be differentiated to support a range of learners, from EAL students to high-achievers. Attendees will learn how to design and implement their own versions of Frayer Models, and tailor them to specific science content, such as complex concepts or processes, equations, and practical skills. Strategies for incorporating them into schemes of work, formative assessment, and exam revision will be shared. By the end of the session, participants will leave with completed templates, ideas for adapting the model to meet diverse learning needs, and a clearer understanding of how a Frayer Model can enhance student independence, engagement, and knowledge retention in science.
