The PD Exchange

International science teacher recruitment and retention

Thursday 8 January 2026·8:45 am

It is a long-recognised problem that physics teachers are in short supply in England. One of the measures adopted by the Department for Education has been to pay a bursary to recruit physics initial teacher trainees. The payment of this bursary has attracted significant interest from international applicants who may often be eligible for this payment too. The DfE has actively recruited international applicants onto initial teacher education courses. The ASE was commissioned by the Gatsby Foundation to research the effectiveness of the policy of recruiting international applicants and to make recommendations based on these findings. This workshop will talk you through our research, what we found and the recommendations we have made.
