CANCELLED The new Dutch science curriculum: connecting the dots

Thursday 8 January 2026·11:15 am

CANCELLED BY COLLEAGUE - 8.A.26 - UNABLE TO GET TO uk In the past two years groups of primary and secondary science teachers, curriculum experts and subject experts have collaborated to design a new Dutch science curriculum. The proposed programme was recently tested and reviewed among 200 schools and will be submitted to the government to become part of our educational laws. We are very proud that we had the opportunity to connect our primary and secondary science curricula by connecting the dots between scientific knowledge, cross-cutting concepts, scientific and technical practices and an inquiry-based mindset. Previously our primary and secondary science curriculum were designed separately which caused some major hiccups in continuity and motivational loss among learners. In parallel a nationwide initiative called Techkwadraat (in collaboration with Sterk Techniek Onderwijs) and a Dutch Network of Expertise for STEM Education was launched to support schools during the implementation phase. We will share the new developments in Dutch science education. In addition we will demonstrate several ways to stimulate self-efficacy and curriculum awareness among teachers using a knowledge network of learning educators.
