Clever questions to improve scientific understanding with equations/graphs

Thursday 8 January 2026·12:25 pm

This workshop will focus on how maths and science can excel by working together. We will explore how teachers can significantly improve scientific understanding (and student exam results) by carefully choosing a range of different question types when working with students on equations or graphs. What do equations and graphs mean to you? When you think like a scientist, they are elegant expressions of the physical world. Sadly, to many students they remain a rather impenetrable blob of algebra, or squiggles in between some axes. Students may be able to plug some numbers in, but they are often not using them to develop a full understanding. Although only a 55 minute session, delegates will have a chance to consider examples from KS4 chemistry and physics (although the concepts apply equally across all science and key stages). They will also take away some simple ideas that can be applied easily to new contexts.
