Empowering dyslexics in science: inclusive curriculum strategies that work

This engaging and practical session focuses on how science education can better support learners with dyslexia through inclusive, evidence-informed strategies. Grounded in classroom experience and enriched by insights from those with lived experience of dyslexia, the session will critically examine current curriculum and pedagogy, and how explore how these can be adapted to reduce barriers and enable success. The presenters aim to: 1. Share current evidence and lived experiences of dyslexia in science learning. 2. Explore practical, inclusive strategies to support dyslexic learners in the classroom. 3. Encourage reflective practice and peer discussion to foster inclusive teaching approaches. While awareness of dyslexia is increasing, many science classrooms still operate in ways that unintentionally disadvantage neurodiverse learners. Traditional assessment styles, dense text-based resources, and a fast-paced curriculum can all present challenges. However, many of these barriers can be mitigated or removed through inclusive design and targeted strategies. This session provides science educators with a practical toolkit grounded in research and real-world experience, to help unlock the potential of dyslexic students. By the end of the session, participants will: 1. Have increased understanding of how dyslexia can affect learning in science. 2. Be equipped with evidence-informed strategies and tools to support inclusive practice. 3. Reflect on and evaluate aspects of their current teaching to improve accessibility.
