The PD Exchange

Evolution across primary science (with ladybirds!)

Thursday 8 January 2026·9:55 am

Everyone loves ladybirds! Using these friendly and colourful insects as a case-study, this session will focus on some key topics in primary science and evolution. The session will present some ways that small changes in approach can prevent the development of key misconceptions which often impede student’s later learning about evolution. We will also learn all about 10 common UK ladybird species using a free new resource from the Natural History Museum, developed with support from the Evolution Education Trust. The resource features 150 real ladybird specimens from the collections at the museum and comes with suggestions for how biology across primary science can be taught from an evolutionary perspective.
