Hands-on, industry-ready: Biotech for post-16 learners
With the introduction of T Level qualifications in Science, there is a growing need for accessible resources that support both theoretical understanding and industry-relevant practical skills. The Amgen Biotech Experience, coordinated in the UK by the University of Hertfordshire, provides free training, loan of research-grade equipment and classroom-ready teaching materials to support molecular biology practical work. ABE aligns closely with level 3 science courses such as T Level, providing authentic lab-based learning in areas such as gel electrophoresis, DNA extraction and genetic engineering. These practicals can otherwise be inaccessible due to cost and resource constraints. MidKent College is the newest hub for the Amgen Biotech Experience in the UK. As a vocational education provider, MidKent College is uniquely positioned to support the rollout of ABE in T Level and other post-16 science classrooms across the region. This new hub expands access for educators and students in the South-East, helping to bridge the gap between classroom science and industry-standard lab practices. This session will highlight how ABE has been implemented in T Level and vocational settings, outlining links to curriculum objectives and offering participants hands-on experience with ABE protocols. The Amgen Biotech Experience recognises that high-quality science education relies on the expertise and commitment of both teachers and technicians. The programme is built around supporting the whole science team, offering CPD, technical guidance and access to equipment. Teachers and technicians are empowered alike to deliver ambitious, hands-on biotechnology lessons with confidence. By the end of this session, participants will: Understand the structure and aims of the Amgen Biotech Experience and how it supports level 3 science qualifications. Gain insight into how ABE enhances students' practical skills and conceptual understanding of molecular biology. Reflect on their current provision and consider how to implement ABE to enrich their science teaching. Leave with a clear action plan and knowledge of how to access free training and resources.
