Let's PLAN to moderate disciplinary knowledge

The new PLAN working scientifically resources were launched at the ASE Annual Conference last year. These resources support the systematic planning, teaching and assessment of the working scientifically statements in the National Curriculum in England. This year's session will support schools to further develop their assessment procedures by using the PLAN resources to moderate the summative judgements of disciplinary knowledge being made by individual teachers so that meaningful data about the working scientifically skills of pupils is being shared across the school. More meaningful data enables teachers in future years to plan with confidence based on reliable information about their pupils' starting points. It also enables senior leaders to have an accurate picture of attainment and progress in science across the school to support curriculum and professional development. Subject leaders, assessment leads and teachers who participate in this session will: •discuss the purpose of moderating assessment judgements •review the progression in working scientifically skills across the phases •carry out a moderation exercise by: •reviewing examples of work and identifying which working scientifically skills are being used • using the PLAN Working Scientifically Matrices to evaluate whether the examples of work meet the expected outcomes. Following this session, participants will: •have developed their understanding of the progression of the working scientifically skills through the phases •have a clear understanding of the 'expected outcomes' for the working scientifically skills in one phase •have the ability to carry out a moderation exercise of the assessment of disciplinary knowledge for their school.
