Outcomes of dialogic teaching for GCSE chemistry (Selected by ASE Research Committee)

The aim of the session is to share the outcomes of a series of Dialogic teaching lessons in GCSE chemistry, as a result of a 10 month long teaching sequence. The characteristics of the talk children engaged in, and the ways in which meaning was made will be discussed. Also explored will be the manner in which the teacher carried out instruction to enable Dialogic learning to occur. This session will be of interest to anyone interested in exploring Dialogic teaching in secondary chemistry classrooms. However it is postulated that these ideas be useful form any secondary science classroom. Practicing teachers should find interest not only in revealing often hidden aspects of student talking and meaning making, but also how they might go about providing purposeful instruction for Dialogic teaching sequences.
