Practical power: Understanding and assessing CPAC in A level science

This CPD session provides an essential introduction to the Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC) for A-level science. Aimed at teachers new to delivering A-level or those seeking a refresher, the session demystifies the practical endorsement process, clarifies assessment expectations, and supports consistent, high-quality delivery of practical science across biology, chemistry, and physics. AQA will provide an overview of the CPAC’s role in A-level science, including its alignment with the cross-board agreement and awarding body expectations. Participants will explore the five CPAC strands and how they are assessed through direct observation and student record-keeping. The session will highlight best practices for tracking progress, providing feedback, and preparing for monitoring visits. Teachers will leave with practical tools and increased confidence to deliver and assess the practical endorsement effectively.
