Tackling mathematical misconceptions in science

This session aims to highlight common mathematical misconceptions that impact on science teaching and learning, and provide strategies to address them. Are your students struggling to interpret maths based questions in science? Are they struggling to transfer their understanding from maths to science? During this session we will explore some of the common mathematical misconceptions held by students, diagnostic questions to help identify these misconceptions as well as applied mathematical strategies to address them. Outcomes: Participants will feel more confident in addressing some of the most common mathematical misconceptions found in the science classroom in order to improve students outcomes on maths in science questions. This session will also aid the liaison between maths and science departments ensuring a common language and transfer of terminology. We are authors of Grappling with Graphs and are currently researching and writing a book for science teachers that isolates key mathematical misconceptions that impact on science teaching, outlining approaches taken in maths to address these and applying these strategies to science lessons.
