Technicians: Microscale biology - tiny science, big impact!
This hands-on session introduces the principles and practical applications of microscale biology. We will explore the benefits of microscale approaches in school biology labs, including cost-effectiveness, reduced waste, and enhanced safety. You will gain confidence in setting up and supporting microscale biology activities for students. Activities Covered Participants will engage with a range of microscale biology demonstrations including taking part in two practicals during the session: Vitamin C Titration β A microscale method to determine the concentration of vitamin C in a sample using iodine solution and starch indicator.Catalase Activity β Investigating enzyme activity using hydrogen peroxide and a biological source of catalase (e.g., potato, liver, or yeast), with a focus measuring the foam produced.By the end of the session, technicians will know how to implement microscale techniques in biology lessons. Be equipped to support teachers and students with safe, effective, and engaging biology practicals, and take away ideas and resources to use in their own school settings.
