Technicians: Prepping for practical A level physics in a mobile device environment

Friday 9 January 2026·1:35 pm

With students and teachers increasingly using laptop PCs, Chromebooks and iPads in our teaching laboratories, this workshop looks at practical ways of collecting and analysing data directly on mobile devices. A range of solutions will be considered, from DIY open-source to plug-and-play. After a short demonstration and explanation of the key ideas and workflows, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in a practical circus of experiments taken from current A-level specifications. In the workshop, delegates will learn how to use: Remote sensors in a range of typical A-level physics experiments Both wired and Bluetooth connections Open-source data-logging and DIY sensors (using Phyphox and component sensors) Motion capture software No prior knowledge or expertise in mobile devices or remote sensors is required—please come along, learn and ask questions. Delegates are encouraged to bring their own device, but additional devices will be available to use in the workshop.
