The Challenge Continuum: Adaptive science pedagogies to support and challenge all learners

This session aims to share conceptions of a ‘challenge continuum’ and ‘ability-in-the-moment’ as a lens through which science teaching resources can be adapted to offer appropriate support and challenge to all learners. We will also share activity styles and resource tweaks that can be quickly and easily implemented across the science curriculum to make activities more inclusive. In this session, TES-Award nominated presenters, Hannah and Emily, will explore a range of inclusive secondary science pedagogies that simultaneously provide opportunities to support struggling students and stretch and challenge the most able. Building on the concept of supporting a continuum of ‘ability-in-the-moment’, the classroom tips and resource templates shared in this session will equip delegates with the tools needed to successfully embed adaptive teaching across the physics, chemistry and biology curricula. At the end of the session delegates will: -Consider the full extent of the “challenge continuum”, including SEND, ‘ability-in-the-moment’, ‘More Able Students’, and students with dual exceptionality when planning activities in Science. -Understand the principles of adaptive teaching and how activities can be designed to offer support and challenge to meet the needs of students at all points on the challenge continuum. -Leave with ready-to-use ideas and templates to embed inclusive pedagogies in their classrooms.
