Turbocharge your science explanations

This is a talk aimed at improving how teachers explain concepts in science through the use of appropriate examples. I will dissect how the examples we use should be chosen, what to look out for to minimise misconceptions and also how to choose non-examples (counter-examples). Participants will have ample opportunities to discuss in small groups, write down effective examples for topics within their specialism and receive feedback from their group and from me. A little bit about me: I am an experienced presenter and I have been giving 1-2 talks per year for the last 5 years. I got interested in this topic after reading Engelmann's and Carnine's Theory of instruction: Principles and applications. It had a big effect on me and I redesigned my explanations on many topics as well as some of the worksheets I use based on these ideas. Students now the ideas much clearer and easier to understand independently of prior attainment.
