Understanding educational outcomes in maths (and science?): a longitudinal, multi-scaled, systems approach

In 2023, the Observatory for Mathematical Education was established with an ambitious ten-year plan to evidence - at scale - how learners’ attitudes and teachers’ practices combine with institutional and national policies to produce varied outcomes for students in different social and educational contexts. This talk will outline the Observatory’s programme and showcase how the data generated from three large cohort studies can help us to understand what is happening in schools, colleges and universities. The presentation will hopefully stimulate discussion about this approach can produce powerful evidence of, and for, educational improvement.
