AI, Socratic Tutors, and Showing Work: Helping Students Show Work with Technology
AI is rapidly changing how students do math, often producing seemingly correct answers without supporting the productive struggle of reasoning. This session explores how teachers can regain insight into student thinking through “Socratic tutors” and other emerging technologies that help students show their steps, give targeted hints, and summarize their reasoning for teacher review. Participants will examine the opportunities and pitfalls arising from current AI and non-AI tools, then build a prototype that makes mathematical reasoning visible, supports timely feedback, and strengthens students’ capacity to think and reflect. Please bring a device so that you can create and test your prototype during the session.
