Conceptual Understanding and Procedural Fluency: Implementing the Why and How of Mathematics Instruction

Participants in this session will explore two of the five strands of mathematical proficiency: Conceptual understanding (the Why of mathematics) and procedural fluency (the How of mathematics). Utilizing hands-on activities and reflective discussions, participants will gain actionable strategies for integrating conceptual understanding and procedural fluency into daily mathematics instruction. A student presenter will teach participants a co-created math game and share learning experiences to illustrate the impact of the interconnectedness of the Why and How of mathematics.
