Getting Messy with Subtraction: Revealing Reasoning and Meaning Through Representation

What lies beneath a subtraction strategy? In this session, we will explore how concrete, representational, and abstract (CRA) models can be used in a non-linear fashion, as interconnected tools for uncovering student thinking. Each model/representation can highlight or obscure particular parts of the underlying mathematics. Lingering in the connections between these representations can yield deeper conceptual understanding. Come jam out in a powerful experience of building bridges across representations while unpacking strategies for 2-digit subtraction with regrouping.
