The Opportunity Makers: How Some Schools Successfully Catch Students Up

Monday 2 February 2026·6:30 pm

In 2018, TNTP released The Opportunity Myth, and since then, district leaders have leveraged the findings as they work to ensure all students have access to four key resources: grade-appropriate assignments, strong instruction, deep engagement, and teachers with high expectations. To further validate those findings, TNTP released the results from our most recent research study. The report, The Opportunity Makers, highlights the practices of “trajectory changing schools” – schools where students may be below grade level but are at grade level by the time they leave school. As illustrated in the findings, these schools invest in belonging, consistency, and coherence to create a powerful baseline experience for all young people. In this session, we will share the findings from The Opportunity Makers and discuss ways that districts and schools can scale the trajectory-changing practices to support literacy instruction.
