Adolescence: Same narrative, different day?

This talk starts with a look at the Netflix show, Adolescence as its starting point. Weaving a couple of segments io the talk, I explain what makes the show so compelling and familiar. I also discuss why it’s so startling, moving and unsettling. The familiarity of the issues of bullying, GBV, the manosphere and “boys being boys”, both attracts us and repels us as teachers, parents, and viewers. This is a talk that invites us all to identify the pressures, the surveillance of masculinity and the ways boys negotiate masculinities from locker rooms to classrooms. Reflecting some of the statistics of Alberta schools, boys and bullying and thinking about boys in sport, this is a conversation that prompts us to see where, when, and how boys learn that its better to be “one of the boys” instead of being marginalized by “the boys”. In short, the show, Adolescence, and this talk allows us to make the familiar strange so that we see, hear, and better understand how boys are schooled in masculinity.
