Mystery Boxes and The Nature of Science: (active participation session)
Searching for an activity to help your students experience the true nature of science as evidence-based, ongoing, and ever-changing? Would you like a better understanding of observation-inference-hypothesis? This activity leads you through making limited observations, creating inferences, and then hypotheses. You will present your tentative position to other “scientists” and collaborate to try to reach a consensus and increase overall confidence. You may even choose to revise your hypothesis based on more evidence. I love the passion, and healthy frustration, this activity generates. In science, we know as much as we know until we know more. We will discuss real life examples of how evolving technology has led to new evidence that provides greater insight and new deeper understanding.
