Talking About the World When the World is on Fire

From wars and protests to political polarization, students bring the world’s tensions into the classroom, and teachers are often left wondering how to facilitate conversations that are meaningful without becoming explosive. This session offers frontloading strategies that prepare students to engage in difficult conversations with care and confidence, as well as techniques for guiding whole-class discussions on current events with nuance, empathy, and critical thinking. By focusing on Social Studies as a launching point, we will explore how to move beyond “both sides” debates and instead create discussions that deepen understanding of power, identity, and perspective-taking. Participants will leave with ready-to-use activities for preparing students, frameworks for structuring group dialogue in ways that minimize conflict and maximize learning, and practical strategies for supporting students as they navigate today’s geopolitical climate thoughtfully and productively.
