What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: Redefining your Role as a Superintendent

Becoming a superintendent is not an extension of previous leadership; it is a 90° turn that requires profound shifts in identity, skills, and time allocation.  Many superintendents struggle not because they lack capability, but because the role demands a fundamentally different way of leading: letting go of beloved instructional work, redefining what it means to “do the work,” and moving from driver to big picture visionary. This session explores the leadership shifts of the superintendency through powerful storytelling, practical application, and reflective tools drawn from Beyond Impossible by Lindsey Whorton. Superintendents burn out when they continue carrying major responsibilities from their previous roles—such as leading instruction, operations, human resources, student services, or other key departments—while simultaneously trying to function as the executive leader of the district. This “two jobs trap” is one of the most common barriers to successfully navigating the leadership passage. Together, we will explore how to intentionally release work, redesign senior teams, and make sustainable leadership shifts.
