Where Curriculum Meets Space: How Portage Is Transforming Elementary Learning

Portage Public Schools is redefining the future of elementary learning. Through intentional, student-centered design, the district is aligning its curriculum goals with the physical environment to create learning experiences that are flexible, engaging, and rooted in real student needs. This session explores how Portage’s early planning, inclusive engagement, and principle-driven approach guided the design of three new elementary schools built to adapt and evolve alongside teaching and learning. Central to this work is the thoughtful integration of furniture design. Flexible seating, mobile work surfaces, and varied learning zones are essential tools that support differentiated instruction, collaboration, and creativity in every classroom. Attendees will hear how curriculum, space, and furniture can be intentionally aligned from the very start of design, how flexible environments support instructional variety and student agency, and how early engagement and principle-driven planning lay the foundation for schools that can grow and evolve alongside teaching and learning.
